Toirdhealbhach Ó Cearbhalláin, to give him his Gaelic name, was born in Newton, near Nobber, County Meath in 1670. At the age of fourteen, when the family moved to Ballyfarnon, Carolan met the MacDermott-Roe family, which proved to be a significant and fortuitous occasion.
